You can’t just chug down a protein shake at any old time of day and expect to see a difference in muscle mass – the timing of your shake is crucial to gaining maximum benefit. A Finnish study published in Amino Acids found that men who consumed a 15g whey protein shake immediately before and after working out saw more significant changes to strength and muscle mass than those who did just one or the other over the 21-week trial period.
The study discovered that it was the increase in a protein called Cdk2 (cyclin-dependant kinase 2), which signals your muscles to produce more stem cells, in turn aiding the process of muscle building, that was to thank. Lead scientist of the study, Juha Hulmi, PhD, noted that “Cdk2 levels increased significantly when men ate protein immediately before and after training.” So, drink up lads!

1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce
1 cup unsweetened rice milk
1 scoop whey protein powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp beta-alanine powder
Blend all ingredients, excluding the ice cubes, until smooth. Then add the ice cubes and blend again until you achieve your desired consistency.
